Evaluation: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Looking back at our work, I feel that we did really well considering the amount of times we changed the idea, not giving us much time to make the title sequence compared to most of the other groups. I feel that our final cut for the title sequence went better than expected, I personally didn't think everyone was going to like the music however that seemed to be one of the things most people enjoyed. At first I didn't think we was going to manage to get our title sequence out on time, but luckily we managed to. One of the hardest things to do for our film was getting the right font, because after our first one got bad replies from everyone, we decided to look for a new one, which involved asking everyone around if they liked it; however everyone who answered had mixed feelings. In the end we kept with our new one, however we don't know if it was the right choice or not.

The length of our title sequence was also an issue because we had to change ideas so many times, it meant that we did not have enough content to put together. Overall our title sequence could of been longer, but I feel that a perfect title sequence doesn't always have to be too long.

I feel like I have learnt news ways of editing with different programs and that i have got more camera experience than before we started the preliminary task. I also learnt that when you have an idea you need to stick with it more or elaborate on it, because the final idea we chose did end up linking with the same theme as the first one, so if we spent more time on our first idea we would have managed to do all the filming without and issue.

Evaluation: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

For the filming of our title sequence we used my DSLR camera, to shoot all of the scenes we needed, we also used a tripod to keep it steady. We were planning on using the Steadicam; however it had already been booked. For the pictures in our title sequence we used Michael's DSLR as it would come out in a clearer photograph. We would of used Michael's DSLR for shooting our filming however it didn't seem to come with a record option. My camera also only had the option of automatic focus which made some of the filming tricky, so we had to be really careful when getting the shots we needed.

For the editing of our film I used Final Cut Pro on the macs, which I have rarely used, this made the editing difficult for me to use at the start, but after time I began to learn more about the program and started finding shortcuts that would help my get the editing done quicker. Whilst I was editing the video, Michael and Jonathan worked on the Music using Logic Pro.

Evaluation: How we plan to attract our audience.

Our film was aimed at 15-23 year olds and mainly towards the male audience. We are planning are attracting this type of audience by not showing to much of whats going, leaving a sense of mystery; leaving people wanting more.

The idea of our film which involves drug deals would get a lot of people interested at this moment in time, due to the fact Breaking Bad is a really popular show and is about drugs also. The title of our film can leave people question what it means by the title, some people will want to know why it's called Twist of Fate and other will want to know what the Twist is.

Therefore spreading our possibilities of gaining our audience wide. Also the music leaves a lot of sense of tension and mystery, leaving people confused and wanting to know what the films about.

Evaluation: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

From my previous work the codes and conventions of a crime/drama film would be:

- A chase scene
- Involvement of props that can be harmful such as knifes or guns.
- The villain would usually have some unidentified problems that will be revealed at the very end of the film.
- The hero who saves everyone will have a partner.

- Characters will usually include someone vulnerable and gangs.
- Crimes will usually be murder/dramas will usually be to do with family of the protagonist.
- Conflicts due to difference in policing.
- Betrayal.

Our film contains most of these conventions, such as villain with unidentified problems and a character who is involved with gangs and betrayal. Some of the things we will not be using is: a chase scene and as our film doesn't revolve a lot around that kind of action. We plan on using weapons in our film, however we do not show them in out title sequence.

Evaluation: What Kind of Media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Throughout the process of looking at films that can relate to the genre we wanted, we found various similar films, such as:

Firstly one of the films we looked at was Bullet Boy, due to a suggestion. This film was distributed by: Verve Pictures from their website they describe their company this way: 'we specialise in the release of independent film in cinemas and on DVD, offering audiences the chance to enjoy original and thought provoking cinema from the UK and around the world.' The fact that they like to provoke cinema from the UK gives our film a
greater chance of being distributed since it is a fully English film.

Secondly another film we looked at was AdultHood, this film was distributed by: Pathé which was a a french business and became the largest film and equipment and production company in the world. They have produced and distributed a large variety of films, going from: 127 hours to Chciken run. However I think this company isn't such a good choice because ours is more of an independent film with not many famous actors.

Finally another film we looked at was Green Street. This film was distributed by Universal have made many famous films such as: Jaws and Jurrasic Park. This is a big company and would most likely only distribute films that have a lot of potential of making a lot of money, therefore not giving our film much of a chance.

Overall I think Verve Pictures would be the best for our film to be distributed by because it is an independent company and work mainly for films made in the UK, since our film is an England only film I think it would stand a great chance with the company.

Evaluation: Target Audience

Evaluation: Media product represents social groups

My media product represents particular social groups such as: Drug dealers and addicts, it also represents the youth, due to the fact that there is a lot of young people dealing drugs and taking them, this is a common representation of teenagers nowadays.

We have created this representation of drug dealers by showing the scenes of drugs people passed to each other from young looking people. Since the hoods up all the time for the drug dealer you can tell that he is trying to look discreet and hide his face. Having hoods up is also a common stereotype for 'chavs' since they usually have to them to look intimidating to everyone around them. This connotes to the drug dealers, because not only does he not want to be noticed he doesn't want people to bother him, therefore looking intimidating is the best thing for him to do.

The dark colours of clothing that the dealer and mostly everyone he deals to shows the theme of the film. It shows that its not going to be a very cheerful film but more of a dark and gloomy themed movie. The ares used for dealing the drugs show the diversity of people who he deals to. It goes from commonly dealing in an alleyway to in buildings and to people wearing suits. This shows that he is not just selling the drugs to one type of person.

Evaluation: Brief

I have been working to make a title sequence of my groups choice. In my group is: Michael and Jonathan. We all worked together in getting an idea for a title sequence, we were debating on the genre until we agreed with Jonathan on crime drama, we had a few names to choose from until we decided to go for 'Twist of Fate'. We went through three film ideas until we finally settled on doing it about a man plotting revenge on drug dealers, who he has had previous bad experience with. In our 3rd and final title sequence idea, it consists of the protagonists taking photographs of drug deals taking place, he then takes them photographs back to his safe house where he then lays the photographs out and pulls out a map to plot his locations that he has been to. We looked at a lot of other title sequences that could link with the work we are doing, such as: Adulthood, Green street Hooligans, Bullet boy and Trainspotting. When then looked at Breaking bad sequences of drugs deals and then looked at how we can use their technique in our work. We wanted to make it easy for the audience to tell what was going on.

Final video for media

We tried uploading the first cut of the video to our blog but it wouldn't work, but the newest one does.

Feedback sheets

We were given feedback sheets to fill out about the other groups title sequences, we got to write about the elements that worked, the elements that needed improving and the ones that didn't work at all. We could also give it a rating out of 3 stars.

Idea change

On the first review of our idea people began to tell us they were confused and that we should instead have a video on people making drugs instead of taking them. Soon after beginning this we were again told another idea which linked revenge with drugs and now that is what we have started to do now.

Even though we have had to change our idea 3 times we have managed to get most of our filming done and are currently working on finishing the music and getting some final shots. Even though this is an inconvenience for our group we are still trying our hardest to get everything together before it is too late.

Editing our video

This is near the end of our editing for our first final draft of our video. You see that i've added the sound all the clips and now I have just started to add the titles to the video. Also due to a suggestion we have added camera click sounds to our video for when it shows pictures.

Day 6 of Filming 11th March

On the 6th day, after school we all went back to my house to try and get some more shots to make the film longer, we added some miscellaneous shots, such as a shot of him putting the camera down and adding the lenses to it. We then found a map which we thought could be useful, so we decided to get some shots of him using the map to plot down locations he has targeted and will be going to next. After all of this we finally had enough footage which eventually led up to about 1:50 which should be enough.

Monday 10 March 2014

Day 5 of Filming 10th March

On Monday we asked if we were allowed to go out and film whilst we had free periods for most of the day, once let out, when went back to my house to film shots of the protagonist arriving at his headquarters where he keeps pictures of drug dealers. We went out and bought two newspapers so that we could rip them up and put them on the table to make it look more believable. When then got the shots of him pulling out his recent photos on a table, then circling his current victim and writing information about him. Looking through this later on we noticed we were still low on footage, so we went out and got more photographs of deals to add to the montage, unfortunately with all of this footage we still was only able to get a minute of useful video, so we had to go get more.

Friday 7 March 2014

Day 4 of Filming 7th March

Today we went out to start filming our new idea, we went to Wickham open space again, with the help of Louis to to get some of the starting shots of the protagonist taking photographs of people making a drug deal, when then went and found different locations to take pictures of me doing different drugs deals with people so that we could collaborate them into a montage of pictures which shows what the protagonist has been doing. After we had got them shots, I uploaded them to the macs and showed everyone, we then decided that we needed more footage so the next free day we had will would go out and film.

Idea change

After showing our rough cut of the video, we was told the video was too confusing and maybe we should change our idea to someone making drugs, instead of doing drugs, we have now gone to start filming again, but this time with the new idea. Jonathan has already got a few shots of the new one from when he went to a science lab, whilst me and michael had an i.t lesson.

Day 3 of Filming 19th February

Today we met up at the end of elsa again and we knew that we needed to reshoot some of the cocaine shots that we had recently taken, so we decided to go back to my house to go reshoot them, once we had reshot them scenes, we then went at filmed more of the journey shots, we went from my house and ended up at Jonathan's where we shot our final scenes. And we all agreed that it seemed that we were done. Once we were finished and all went home, I again uploaded the new footage to my computer and then sent it to everyone in my group. I also made a rough cut of the video at my home.

Tuesday 18 February 2014

Day 2 of Filming 18th February

On the second day of filming everyone met at the end of elsa road and we went to my house to film shots of Jonathan leaving it, then we did the shots of Jonathan walking to Wickham open space to show the journey he takes to meet his friend. We did this for a 2 hours and then left and we all went home, I uploaded all of the videos to my computer then sent them to everyone else in the group so they can have a look at them, after they had a look at them we decided that we still needed to redo a few more shots for tomorrow.

Monday 17 February 2014

Day 1 of Filming 17th of February

On Monday we met up at the end of Elsa road, we then went to my house to start our filming. We started with the cocaine shots and the main character getting ready in the house. After we had made them shots we looked through them and decided if we needed any reshoots. The process of getting these shots took about a couple of hours. Once we all went home, I uploaded these videos to my computer and sent them to everyone in the group so they can get a proper look at what we need to shoot next and if we need to reshoot anything else.

Catch Me if You Can

The Catch Me if You Can title sequence is a very smoth flowing sequence that always as a sense of movement, this represents how the film is going to be about constant movement and there will be a lot travelling.

The two different fonts used when showing the DreamWorks logo it could represent the two main characters in the film. The serif font looks western, this could represent a sheriff chasing down and outlaw, instead of an FBI agent chasing down a indentity thief. The works on screen are used to help change the appearance of the thief, they are also used to create objects or the sequence, this could show that he is sly and blends in. Also the style of the title sequence is very similar to Saul Bass's work.

(STINCS) Title sequence analysis

Setting- Through the title sequence you can see the show is set in modern times, since there are silhouettes of modern cars, helicopters and guns. The style is similar Saul Bass, since there is a lot of silhouetted people and objects in the sequence.

Theme- The mood shows that it is a lighthearted action comedy show, you can tell this by the music playing in the background, how it is not depressing or serious, but is very up-beat and cheerful. From what the silhouetted man is doing, you can also tell it is not serious, since it starts off, by coming out of a mans nose.

Iconography- The costume shown at the start of the sequence reveals the main character and shows you what type of job he has, he is wearing a white shirt with a tie and name badge with a bunch of pens in his pocket. This costume is usually used for working in a shop as people would need to know your name. The guns used in the sequence help shows that it is action, the other props used such as binoculars and a helicopter, it shows that the show is about spies. At the end of it you see a laptop which could be significant since it will be the last thing you see. Also a laptop can be used for hacking which is needed in a spy mission.

Narrative- The story of the show is about someone who gets lots of information stuck in his head by accidentally watching something he shouldn't have, then gets forced to join a spy organisation, since he is the only one who has the information.

Characters- In the title sequence, you can see what the main character looks like by the picture it shows on his name tag, the attire he is wearing shows the kind of job he has, meaning that he is not a well paid man. The way he dresses could also show that he can been seen as a nerd. Throughout the title sequence you can only see the other characters faces, but with what else happens shows what kind of personality they have. When the woman's face comes up the screen turns red to resemble blood, this could show that she is a very violent person. Also at another point when the binoculars go on a man you see a helicopter in a a background which could show that he very destructive.

Style- The style of the title sequence, shows that the show is about spies, you can tell this by what is being shown on screen, for instance a gun and you see through its barrel, which is a rip-off of James Bond. The other things seen is a small car which is used for people to go out and help people with there problems.

Media lesson: Sound

In our media lesson, we looked out different ways sound is used to create different effects, in the lesson we were given video cameras to go around school and try to create different sounds which would usually be heard or used in a horror movie.

We used things such as puddles, a coin scratching, using objects to move along a radiator to make a weird sound that could represent the sound of something growling or making a noise to scare someone.

Analysis of Public Enemies

Title Sequence for Public Enemies from Preston Schulz on Vimeo.

The title sequence for the film Public Enemies starts of with silhouetted lines moving around the screen, they move into different positions creating different a road, it then keeps of changing into different objects, such as: a gun, another road from the bullets, then into a background, etc. The title sequence created is very similar to the style of Saul Bass, they use silhouetted lines to create different objects to tell the viewer what the film is about.

The title sequence starts with two parallel lines creating a road and showing cars drive down it, the type of cars that you see, helps you tell when the film is based, which is 1933-34. Throughout the sequence there are different types of guns and a lots of bullets flying around, this helps us know the genre of the film, which is a crime drama film. Also due to year of the film it helps us know what the film is about, as gangsters used to live around this time.

The music used  in the background is jazz, which was popular around the time of gangsters. The music helps create an atmosphere for what the film is going to be about, it makes it very obvious it's about gangsters, since it has jazz, guns and 1933 vehicles.

Media Lesson 2

This week in our media lesson, we did another powerpoint presentation on Richard Morisson who creates title sequences for films. We included the films he has made titles for, information about his life, then we described two title sequences for films he made.

Analysis of Anatomy of a murder (1959)

Mise-en-scene/Camera

The colours used in this title sequence are black, white and grey. The grey in the title sequence can mean many different things in a film, it could mean that the film is either very depressing or dull. It could also mean that the film is a very dark one which would be backed up by the title which has the word 'Murder' in it. From what you see in the title is very similar to work that he usually does, he has a silhouette to move around the screen, this is there to represent a crime scene, he gets it to move around so that he can have the titles in different parts of the body.

Sound/Editing

The music used in this title sequence is very mysterious yet cheerful feel to it, this creates the effect the film will be a light-hearted crime thriller, condescending what I said early about the film being dark due to the colours. The body parts move around the screen to show the different people who have created the film, they mainly used the arms, in a few shots the arms came on screen and wiped away some titles to reveal some more.

Napoleon Dynamite Title Sequence

The Napoleon Dynamite title sequence

The Napoleon Dynamite title sequence is a very simple and easy title sequence to have been created. The title sequence used everyday objects such as: plates, a wallet and foil to show everyone the people who created the film. They put ketchup and other forms of condiment on the plates or the food to show who produced the film and give all the credit. Some of the objects shown on screen represented the persons name they were showing, the way they show you the title of the film is by pulling up an I.D card which shows the name Napoleon Dynamite, this is a very clever technique because the title of the film is also the name of the main character, by showing the I.D card you get to see what the main character to looks like and know the name of the film.

The items that appear tell us what kind of person the main character is, at one point you see a Alien club card, which tells us that the main character is nerdy and likes conspiracy. The food that is shown is really greasy and fattening which shows that the main character is unhealthy, you also see some handheld gaming console showing he is also a gamer, which are usually represented as also being nerdy. At another point you can see a shuriken made out of tin foil which means that he likes to play with what he uses for food, people would usually represent this as being a sad thing to do and people would probably bully him.

Media Lesson 1

In the class we did a presentation as a film pitch for project that we were given. In the presentation we discussed the plot, actors, budget, release date, profit and log line.

The first Mickey Mouse cartoon, circa 1929, features both Mickey and Minnie, but its main title, “Plane Crazy,” is lackluster:
Over time, the very appearance of white-on-black title lettering became a visual trope, recurring as it does in practically every Woody Allen film. Allen relies on the device primarily to build a visual identity, although its economy is a practical advantage, too.

The way he relies on the devices to build a visual identity is interesting and could be a useful idea for when we make our title sequence.

The concept of score visualization first conceived by Oskar Fischinger in his film “Studies” anticipates the effects created by Saul Bass in “The Man With the Golden Arm” (1955) and later by Susan Bradley in “Monsters, Inc” (2001):

The way the title starts gives me a detective feel, this can link back to our film since it is to do with gangs and crime, however I feel that this could be a very helpful title in inspiring ours.

The revolutionary title sequence for “Se7en” (1995) by Kyle Cooper was named by New York Times Magazine as “one of the most important design innovations of the 1990s”:

The sound and music used in this title sequence, gives a very creepy and on edge feel, however the way they have used random sounds such as a record scratching to add to their title can be used in different ways.
